California is Entirely Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.
For the first time in 25 years, every region of the state is facing dryness. This significant achievement arrives after grueling years marked by insufficient rainfall that intensified blaze threats and challenged its massive agricultural sector.
A Chart Reveals No Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that all of California is free from drought or abnormal dryness. This development resulted from multiple heavy precipitation that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their typical levels.
“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” noted a climate scientist.
Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons
Achieving this status included intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, causing significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Even into late December, regions like the state's northeast corner were deemed abnormally dry. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those remaining dry spots.
A Crucial Snowpack Presents a Challenge
However, authorities caution that being out of drought does not mean being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the average for this date.
This snowpack, which supplies about a third of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a critical factor for the year ahead. State experts point out that it is premature to make predictions for the annual water supply.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by 1 April so that we’re closer to average.”
While the drought map is entirely green, the next challenge is to sustaining this precious water balance during the months to come.
