Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent acronym surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the military campaign against Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This term is unique to Gaza, per insights from doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is unusual for medical staff to care for a minor who has lost their whole family. However, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government disputes these allegations, just as it disavows each claim it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

A Selective Vision

Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used unfair vote practices last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest turns 70 next year – almost double the projected longevity of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A contest that initially championed peace has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
