For the Checkout Assistant That Left Me Absolutely Speechless – I Salute You

This occurred on a Sunday morning, and I felt in a foul mood, refueling my mother's vehicle. It was one of those petrol stations that also functions as a convenience store, so you run the risk of ending up in line customers carrying goods of slightly overpriced groceries. It's an awful situation to unfold when all you want is to complete a simple refueling. Terrible.

My position was fourth among those waiting. Just one employee working, a female attendant. Something stood out in her demeanor. Once the slowpoke at the head of the line had finally paid for his purchases, his pastry, and some breakfast items, I could have sworn overhearing the cashier wish him an excellent day. Strange. Maybe it was a mistake, or perhaps she spoke and was being sarcastic. The thought crossed my mind if she might actually be a supporter in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down straightforward customers like me.

Taking a step forward, now third in line. The next shopper of our group completed her gasoline purchase with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “Have a wonderful day.” No, actually, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. A stateside native? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here wishes anyone those exact words, or even just a nice day. Quite out of place. Rarely does one encounter many Americans visiting this town, least of all holding jobs in fueling spots or anywhere else.

I was second now. Following a senior shopper engaged in a protracted effort with her basket, her purchases, her handbag and her membership pass. It went on for ever. After she finished, the woman also was wished a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by saying something hilarious in her direction, to see if she did that response as they gaze at you, unsmilingly, and state very earnestly: “You are very amusing.” But I couldn’t think of a jest to express.

I just had to settle for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, which amounts to no different – as she gazed straight at me, piercingly, and bid me a wonderful day. I felt better for it. A positive experience.
