Jurgen Klopp states a return to coach Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who left Liverpool in 2024, has suggested that rejoining the club remains an option. Klopp, following a hugely successful nine-season tenure which brought continental glory and the Premier League crown for three decades, currently occupies positions as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
The club claimed the league title in the previous campaign, but many fans holding him in high esteem would be thrilled by the possibility that he may eventually return. Speaking candidly, he told his interviewer: “I declared I will never coach another team on English soil. Which implies in case it's my former club...yeah. It's plausible.”
“Being 58, so I could make the decision in a few years, it's uncertain. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, it's not necessary. I'll wait and observe how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on what circumstances would have to unfold to tempt his return to the dugout, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull toward coming back. “I don’t even know exactly, I enjoy my current role,” he commented. “I don’t miss coaching; I avoid standing under bad weather through long matches; No need for media briefings four times, three times a week or constant media duties weekly.
“The locker room isn't missed per se, yet sharing a meal with the players having a nice chat, is pleasant. We won a lot of games so there was often positive atmosphere at the club. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
Klopp was full of praise regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the adjustments which secured the championship in the previous season. They've been defeated four consecutive matches in every contest following significant transfers, yet he dismissed the suggestion it could be a slump.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward in Flo[rian] Wirtz, critics will regret if spoken against. An outstanding player. The French striker, excellent performer. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, things will improve.”
Heartfelt Words for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of the Portuguese star, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, and its impact on Liverpool. Jota was killed in a road accident alongside his brother in July.
“How do you replace a person like him? It goes beyond the player himself, his personality mattered. I can’t imagine the team environment without him in it. Putting it into words is tough regarding this. It was an incredible shock for the entire squad also. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it as an excuse but it is the situation. Being in that space where he was omnipresent. Dealing with that on a personal level is difficult. Unbearable.”
