Forecasters are reporting a chilly beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Go Ahead In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are expected to take place, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," stated the national forecaster.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with no rain and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making extra layers a necessity, as per forecasters.

To the north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Advisories for Friday

Moving into Friday, advisories are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

• Transport is expected to be disrupted.
• Travelers should to allow extra time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on trains and buses.

Readings Expected to Drop Even More

With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to batter the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Advisories Released

At the same time, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this indicated the weather was expected to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a likely increase in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
