New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the affordable apartment that was a central issue throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for nearly all New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to our family's safety and the importance of directing my complete efforts on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Although my address will change there, the community will continue to reside within me and the work I do," he said.

Political Debate

During his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the affordable housing even though he is from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not every mayor have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a space for public city functions, and championed significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria home.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.

Within, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
