Outrage Explodes as Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to denounce Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Online Post
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on social media to describe the deceased director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Developments and Detention
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a appalling and despicable comment,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "He is a sick man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his party to defend the statements.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the shooting of another individual.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
