A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Venus had earlier stated in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event.
