The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
As the debut season of the acclaimed sci-fi show wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
