This Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Curb the Influence On Speculators

Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside the Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop stocked with exclusive merchandise. Fans can look forward to products like plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies that are inspired by the institution's theme. The big draw, however, is a limited-edition Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. The store is scheduled from on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited volume filled with stunning artwork depicting creatures in their natural habitats. It's essentially like what a Pokémon Professor might publish once trainers submit their data, or a naturalist's journal might have created if the famous islands teemed with flying-types rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious treatment, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in animal behavior and ecology.

What Makes This Special Card Different

The company regularly for The Pokémon Company to release promos for big events and crossover partnerships. Many such collector items often feature the iconic electric rodent who serves as the franchise mascot. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. While exact measurements were not immediately shared, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with customers able to get only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Activity

Per an official announcement, some of the pop-up items may also be available outside the institution itself. However, a wider release will only be specific stores in the UK. Importantly, collectors cannot purchase this promo through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is a given, it appears they're going to have trouble hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those feeling left out, there is the upcoming fossil-themed display headed to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny from purchases made in the Museum shop and its online store, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of 400 scientists dedicated to conducting studies to discover solutions to the global ecological crisis," it says.
