Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile's New Leader.
In a decisive second-round vote, ultra-conservative candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
With over 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely built on promises to combat rising violence and significantly reduce immigration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the race, he issued an stern warning for them to depart before the new term begins or face deportation.
His plans envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as constructing holding facilities, border walls, security fences, and increasing the military presence on the northern border.
Amid a Continental Wave
Numerous analysts view Kast's success as aligning with a wider conservative shift in the region, following recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts further view it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left and right-wing administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Governing Without a Strong Mandate
Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast does not hold an overall majority in the legislature, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even when various right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative landscape may challenge his policy goals, such as a promise to slash public spending by billions within 18 months—a proposal for which he has not offered specifics.
"We have many aspects about how a Kast presidency will look like that are uncertain because he has not said the way he will do them," said a political science analyst.
The expert added, "Regarding the economy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right-wing. However where there is much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse throughout the race."
